After the meetings with residents, workshops, analysing requests and suggestions, we are presenting solutions for traffic calming in Karolew.

Our suggestion is to create a tempo-30 zone in the whole area of Karolew. Such a solution will increase traffic safety through limiting the speed between cars and other road users. Moreover, it will smooth driving and raise capacity of controlled intersections. In addition, a system of uncontrolled intersections forcing drivers to think is introduced by our project.

Another suggestion is to assembly speed bumps in front of pedestrian crossing in order to limit car speed and not intervene with other road users. We think that such a solution would work with the following streets: Karolewska, Bratysławska and Wróblewskiego.
Installing sinusoidal speed bumps at Wróblewskiego made from precast concrete units would improve traffic safety. Proper profiling makes the speed bump convenient for all road users at the maximum speed of 30 km/h.
A Miniroundabout with a diameter of 3m at the intersection of Bratysławska, Karolewska and Wileńska will not become a problem for commercial trucks and public transport. This solution will improve traffic safety through reducing potential collision courses typical for a traditional intersection and smoothing traffic.

Changing geometry of the roadway through introducing diagonal parallel parking. Assign parking places force drivers to properly adjust their driving. Using such a solution along Wileńska and Wróblewskiego will decrease car speed and regulate parking habits in the estate.

Another solution would be to narrow drive lanes through painting traffic marks and introducing refuge islands made from precast concrete units. This will adjust the width of the line to existing conditions. Moreover, the intersection zone of Bratysławska and Wróblewskiego will be partially narrowed through traffic marks. Bratysławska will be narrowed through introducing bicycle lanes.

Intersection Wróblewskiego-Bratysławska:

Intersection: Karolewska-Wróblewskiego-Bratysławska:

Wróblewskiego will gain tens of parking places owing to them being expertly located next to curbs. Their diagonal placement will cause meandring and therefore traffic calming.

About project

The project „Safe City – a different way” is financed with a sum of 285 000 zł from Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein as part of Citizens for Democracy Programme (implemented by the Stefan Batory Foundation in partnership with the Polish Children and Youth Foundation) with EEA Funds. The project is aimed at increasing the influence of citizens of Łódź on decisions and actions, which are to ensure road traffic safety and quality of public space.
