Midwinter, the time when the amount of sunlight is limited, seems like a perfect time to discuss proper street light design.

spotkanie-luty2015-relacjaThis time the meeting concerned designing artificial lightning. To collaborate with this one, dr inż. Wiesława Pabjańczyk from the Technical University of Łódź was invited. At university, she conducts lectures, laboratories and seminars on lightning technique, lightning metrology, lightning facilities research and quality control systems. She is the director of an accredited testing laboratory of lightning and electrotechnical equipment at the Institute of Electrical Power Engineering at the Technical University of Łódź and a member of the presidium of Polish Lightning Committee SEP CIE and KT 4 in PKN. She specialises in interior lightning technology, architecture illumination and energy efficiency in lightning.

The most interesting subject discussed at the meeting included: types of lighning used, most common irregularities committed by road builders, too frequent nonconformities to accepted standards and downplaying the importance of lightning in road safety. Ms Pabjańczyk mentioned an episode in our city's history where one of the Vice President requested that the lights are switched on later and switched off more often. She rhetorically asked whether anyone who wanted to cut costs of electricity took into account the cost of decreasing sense of security on streets.

The invite to our meeting was sent to the residents of Łódź. It was also sent to the Road and Transportation Authorities whose employee responsible for street lighning attended the meeting. It was also attended by Urszula Niziołek-Janiak, the councillor for the Transport and Redevelopment Committee of the City Council of Łódź. The presentation of our expert was followed by an interesting and long discussion.

At the meeting, another episode of our publication - one gathering all provisions concerning local government with regards to traffic - was handed out to all the attendants.

At the meeting we distributed materials on the topic, in the seventh part of the series we described the importance of proper street lightning in increasing the sense of security, schemes of proper lightning at pedestrian crossings and a brief on how to obtain information from the City Hall. The publication is available online free of charge. .
