EDITORIAL

There's another episode of our publishing house through which we are trying to cover different traffic safety issues. We provide examples from all over the world and Poland as well which can be used on our streets to increase sense of security on the road. To be frank, this issue was particularly revealing - it was a real enlightment.

LIGHTNING MATTERS

This time the issue covers street lightning. It may seem that the issue is as clear as day - the streets are to be illuminated. Is there any philosophy to it? Well, there is. Dr inż. Wiesława Pabjańczyk (The Technical University of Łódź) was our expert on the topic. She presents the analysis on how underestimated designing city street lightning is.

THE ROLE OF LIGHTNING

Cities are designed to be resided primarily during the day. Proper lightning does not only highlight the aesthetic value of the space, it also has influence on our sense of security in it and how we move around it. Most road incidents at dusk/dawn are reported in November and December - those two months make up for 30% accidents at this time of day. Research shows that proper lightning helps decrease the number of accidents at night on city roads.

Moreover, lightning modernisation is an investment with one of the highest financial return rates. The savings may reach up to 60%. Therefore, there is no risk in saying that we should study proper lightning more carefully as it will not only improve our sense of security on the road but save money from the public budget as well.
